"I used to think nurses were women,
I used to think police were men,
I used to think poets were boring,
Until I became one of them."
Benjamin Zephaniah
Welcome to our Year 6 Zephaniah Class, where we feel inspired by the determination shown by our inspirational person Benjamin Zephaniah. Born in Birmingham to Jamaican parents, Zephaniah found school a challenge with his dyslexia and left school at the age of 13. However, that did not stop him from using his voice to raise awareness to the issues in the world around us. Zephaniah used 'dub' poetry, performance poetry to music, to talk about homelessness, unemployment and equality. In 1994, he published his first collection of children's poems, 'Talking Turkeys', which was so popular it had to go into emergency reprint! We have lots of fun learning his poems about looking after our environment, respecting people and our different cultures to inspire us and prepare us for our next challenge.
